Tuberculosis is one of the oldest diseases of mankind and is a leading cause of human suffering and loss of life. There are nearly 9 million new cases and 2 million deaths from tuberculosis worldwide every year. Lymph node tuberculosis is seen in nearly 35 per cent of extrapulmonary tuberculosis which constituted about 15 to 20 per cent of all cases of tuberculosis. In human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive patients, extrapulmonary tuberculosis account for up to 53 to 62 percent cases of tuberculosis  Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the most common causative agent in India.
