Textile structures with embedded active agent–loaded microcapsules have found their application in many fields such as medicine, cosmetics, and wellness. Their role will grow with an increase in peoples' needs and advances in disciplines such as materials science, textile engineering, pharmaceutical engineering, and transport phenomena. In light of environmental awareness, relevant research should be directed toward more sustainable reagents for the preparation of microcapsules but also in binding them to textiles. This aspect would widen the range of current applications. Furthermore, biodegradability of textile structures should especially be addressed, in particular regarding novel vehicles for intra-body delivery of drugs.A demand for longer release of active agents is always a beneficial aspect of controlled release systems. Optimizing the composition of the polymer wall of microcapsules and the encapsulation method should be reflected in a better release control. Special attention should be paid to stimuli-responsive polymers that could impart additional functionality to textile-based controlled release vehicles. These polymers have found wide application in free form and the challenge would be to expand their use in the form of microcapsules attached to the textile structures.
