Tendon Surgery

Tendon Surgery

Tendon surgery is a procedure designed to restore a partially or fully torn tendon anywhere in the body. Tendons are very strong fibrous strands of tissue that connect muscles to bones. The Achilles tendon, for example, connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. Tendons occur throughout the body, from the small tendons in your fingers to larger ones like the biceps tendon that connects your upper arm muscle to your shoulder.

Any tendon can become damaged or torn due to overuse or injury. A partial tear of the tendon may not require any treatment other than rest, while a completely torn major tendon may require immediate tendon surgery. Tendon repair surgery can be done on an inpatient or outpatient basis, depending on the tendon involved and the seriousness of the damage. Surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, for example, would require a hospital stay, while surgery to repair a tendon in the finger may be an outpatient procedure.
