IJSME ensures the maintenance of its standards by publishing the high quality, original and new advances in its field. The Exercise Is Medicine (EIM) initiative calls for physical activity as a standard part of medical treatment and the patient care process. EIM urges health care providers to assess their physical activity levels at each visit, to provide brief advice with physically active patients, and to "write down" a basic exercise prescription. Before leaving the clinical setting, inactive patients should be referred to the physical activity resources available to help them become more physically active. The EIM was launched by CMHA President Robert E. Sallis, MD, FACSM in 2007, who has continued to champion the EIM initiative since its inception. Under the direction of Dr. Sallis and the EIM Advisory Board, Adrian Hutber, PhD, is a supervisor. From 2007 to 2017, EIM became a global global initiative with more than 40 countries around the world. The first five years of the initiative focused on the global awareness that "exercise is good medicine". More recently, efforts have turned to the implementation of the EIM solution in health systems.
