Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy.

Diabetes mellitus (DM), better known as diabetes, is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by high blood sugar over an extended period of time. Symptoms often include frequent urination, increased thirst and increased appetite. If left untreated, diabetes can lead to many complications. Acute complications may include diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperglycemic hyperosmolar condition, or death. Serious long-term complications include cardiovascular disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, foot ulcers, nerve damage, eye damage, and cognitive impairment.
