The psychodynamics of work, an approach developed by Christophe Dejours in the 1970s, provided the framework for this participatory, interpretative and complete inquiry. The approach was deemed appropriate specifically because it allows for a comprehensive inquiry of the relationship between the organization of work and the mental health of workers. The core concepts of the approach are pleasure and suffering at work and defensive strategies that workers apply to ease the perception of the suffering they experience and so be able to keep on working. The interviews were conducted in groups and on a voluntary basis.
