Peripheral vascular disease commonly referred to as peripheral artery disease or peripheral artery occlusive disease or peripheral obliterative arteriopathy, refers to the obstruction of large arteries. But, these do not include the ones present in the heart, aortic arch vasculature or brain. Peripheral vascular disease can be caused due to atherosclerosis, stenosis a thrombus or embolism formation. It may cause either chronic or acute ischemia or lack of blood supply. Usually peripheral vascular disease is used to refer to blockages in the lower extremity which is atherosclerotic.
