The Earth Sciences can be considered a branch of the planetary sciences, but with a much older history. The study of the four main areas of the earth sciences encompass, the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere and the biosphere, each then being divided into more specialized fields. There are both reductionist and holistic approvals of earth sciences. It is also the study of the earth and its neighbors in space. Some earth scientists use their knowledge to locate and develop energy and mineral resources. Others are studying the impact of human activity on Earth's environment and devising methods to protect the planet.
