Biomechanics is the study of the structure, function and motion of the mechanical aspects of biological systems, at any level from whole organisms to organs, cells and cell organelles Biomechanics deals with the movement of a living body, including how muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments work together. Biomechanics is a subfield of the larger field of kinesiology, specifically focusing on the mechanics of the movement.

Sports biomechanics is a subfield of mechanics and is the study and analysis of professional athletes and sports activities in general.  In this study, the laws of mechanics are applied in order to gain a greater understanding of athletic performance through mathematical modeling, computer simulation and measurement.
