Packet switching may be a method of grouping data that's transmitted over a digital network into packets. Packets are made from a header and a payload. Data within the header is employed by networking hardware to direct the packet to its destination where the payload is extracted and employed by application software. Packet switching may be a digital network transmission process during which data is broken into suitably-sized pieces or blocks for fast and efficient transfer via different network devices. These packets are then routed by network devices to the destination.
