We give an introduction to category theory and operad theory aimed at the undergraduate level. We first explore operads in the category of sets, and then generalize to other familiar categories. Finally, we develop tools to construct operads via generators and relations, and provide several examples of operads in various categories. Throughout, we highlight the ways in which operads can be seen to encode the properties of algebraic structures across different categories.
