Nicotine commonly found in cigarettes is actually produced by plants as a natural protectant to safeguard from insects. It resembles the acetylcholine neurotransmitter as thus blocks the ACH receptors when used by humans. It also stimulates the production of dopamine which leads to drug dependence and a feeling of euphoria. Severe withdrawal symptoms are observed for nicotine.
