Microscopic colitis is a chronic condition. It causes inflammation of the colon. These conditions are referred to as microscopic, because unlike other inflammatory bowel diseases, there is no sign of inflammation of the lining of the intestine when viewed during a colonoscopy procedure. Microscopic colitis can only be diagnosed by biopsies of the colon which demonstrate inflammation on the microscope. The cause of microscopic colitis is not known till date.Microscopic colitis (MC) is an intestinal inflammatory disorder which is characterized by specific histopathological findings that include an increased number of lymphocytes in the colonic epithelium. The characteristic feature is chronic watery diarrhea in the absence of macroscopic changes in the large bowel.
