Integrated theories are theories that combine the concepts and central propositions from two or more prior existing theories into a new single set of integrated concepts and propositions. The most common form of integration involves combining social control and social learning theories. The Integrative Therapies Program has launched a number of studies to determine the efficacy of certain complementary modalities such as the use of milk thistle (a non-toxic herb) to help heal liver toxicity associated with chemotherapy, the role of antioxidants in combination with chemotherapy, and the effect of aromatherapy in relieving anxiety and nausea in patients undergoing bone marrow transplant. Integrative counselling, as the name suggests, is a combined approach to psychotherapy that brings together different elements of specific therapies. Integrative therapists take the view that there is no single approach that can treat each client in all situations.
