The heart is a muscular organ that plays a major role in pumping blood all over the body through the blood vessels of the circulatory system. It is able to provide blood to the body with oxygen and nutrients and it will remove all the metabolic waste. The location of the heart is specifically in the mediastinum, the middle compartment of the thorax. Heart transplantation is the replacement of a patient's diseased or injured heart with a healthy donor heart. It is a surgical procedure performed on patients with end-stage heart diseases. Heart transplantation cannot be considered as a cure for heart disease, but it can be considered as a treatment to improve the quality of life. Patients with end-stage heart disease which threatens their life after proper medical treatment may be considered for heart transplantation.
