Echocardiography is a test that uses sound waves to produce live images of your heart. The image is called an echocardiogram. It  is a painless test that uses sound waves to create moving pictures of your heart. An echocardiography, echocardiogram, cardiac echo or simply an echo, is an ultrasound of the heart. Doppler echocardiography provides information on blood movement inside cardiac structures and on hemodynamics.A technician will put a hand-held device called a transducer on your chest. It sends high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) that bounce off your heart creating images and sounds. An echocardiogram shows us the structure and function of the heart. The results may reveal abnormalities such as: damage to the heart muscle; heart defects; abnormal cardiac chamber size. An understanding of conventional echocardiogram and knowledge of novel applications of existing methods and emerging imaging echo techniques is important. This facilitates better communication and improves the ability to compare results between studies as well as differentiate normal from abnormal cardiac abilities. Echocardiography is appropriate for use in patients with known or suspected cardiac pathology.
