A photonic integrated circuit or integrated optical circuit is a device that integrates multiple photonic functions and as such is similar to an electronic integrated circuit. Photonics is the science of light. It is the technology of generating, controlling, and detecting light waves and photons, which are particles of light. The characteristics of the waves and photons can be used to explore the universe, cure diseases, and even to solve crimes.
Diamond offers unique material advantages for the realization of micro- and nanomechanical resonators because of its high Young’s modulus, compatibility with harsh environments and superior thermal properties. At the same time, the wide electronic bandgap of 5.45 eV makes diamond a suitable material for integrated optics because of broadband transparency and the absence of free-carrier absorption commonly encountered in silicon photonics.
