Asthma and allergic diseases are complex conditions caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. More than 100 genes have been associated with asthma and related conditions.Allergic asthma has been called a “syndrome” resulting from a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors.Genetic differences may alter susceptibility to asthma, as well as responsiveness to asthma medications. Significant genetic variation exists between and within racial and ethnic groups, but the issue is confounded by important coexisting economic, cultural, and environmental differences, including geography.A few previously suspected genetic variants have been confirmed in these studies as asthma susceptibility loci, or as loci contributing to disease severity or response to treatment.
