Arterial stiffness indicates two major terms - arteriosclerosis and atheromatosis. These are often combined to atherosclerosis. Arteriosclerosis is a generalized thickening and stiffening of the arterial wall and is related to high blood pressure or hypertension. Arterial stiffness describes the rigidity of the arterial wall. In the last decade, there has been increasing interest in the potential role of arterial stiffening in the development of cardiovascular disease in adults. The gold standard of arterial stiffness measurements is aortic PWV. For PWV measurement, velocity is expressed as change in distance over change in time (V = ΔD/ΔT). Distance is measured at two sites along a single vessel or at two separate sites in the arterial tree.
