Allergen immunotherapy, also called desensitization aims at patients suffering from allergies. It is a long-term treatment which decreases allergic symptoms by increasing tolerance to the specific allergen and involves the repeated administration of allergenic extracts to the patients either subcutaneously or sublingually for the treatment of allergic respiratory diseases. This immunotherapy is associated with a shift from Th2 to Th1 immune responses, and the production of T regulatory cells that reduce the immune response to relevant allergens. Allergen immunotherapy is regularly recommended for treatment of allergic rhinitis due to pollen or dust mite allergy and for asthma if the symptoms are severe and if the patient wants to avoid medication and side effects.
