Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) has evolved from a number of Zurich institutions steeped in a long tradition: 2007 saw the amalgamation of two existing Zurich institutions, the Zurich University of Music and Theatre (HMT) and Zurich Canton University of Design and Art (HGKZ), to form Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), with its five departments. These institutions and their various disciplines and departments have a proud
history dating back to the late nineteenth century.
It has been offer graduate study leading to Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as a wide range of continuing
education and professional development programmes. The degree programmes qualify students for professional careers in the arts and culture, in the creative industries, and in other areas of
business and society.
It has around 2,800 students and 650 teaching staff, Zurich University of the Arts is one of the major universities of the arts in Europe. The study and research programme covers the areas of design, film, fine arts, music, dance, theatre, transdisciplinary studies, and the teaching of arts and design. The university also has many venues for exhibitions and performances, where the results of the
education provided can be shown in public.
The Institutes launch research initiatives, implement research projects and programmes and support research activities throughout the entire university. Research activities at the Institutes are also incorporated into cooperative doctoral and other postgraduate programmes. Each Institute has at least one Research Focus (FSP). Two FSPs at ZHdK are independent, while one cross-departmental Research Focus is coordinated by the directors of various Institutes and selected researchers from the Institutes.
