Yangtze River
Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, one of the earliest Institutes in the field of fishery sciences, was founded in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province in 1958. In 1965, it was moved to Shashi City (now Jingzhou City), Hubei province. The specimen hall of YRFRI The Institute is constituted of two research labs named as Key Laboratory of Freshwater Fish Germplasm Resources and Biotechnology，Ministry of
Agriculture of China, and Key Laboratory of Freshwater
Ecology and Healthy Aquaculture, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences. These two labs have been mainly devoted to the studies on applied technology and applied fundamental theory in various fields of fisheries, including conservation of freshwater fish germplasm resources and their
genetics & breeding, conservation of endangered aquatic animals,
investigation & evaluation for fishery resources and monitoring & protection for water environment, fish
biology and breeding technology, fish
nutrition and
fish diseases control, standardization and inspection for aquatic products quality. Moreover, a ministerial center for inspection and supervision of germplasm, a ministerial workstation field observation and experiment of fishery resources and environment,a ministerial key laboratory of aquatic animals diseases along Yangtze Basin, a ministerial experimental base for clinical trails of new aquatic medicine, a ministerial center for fishery germplasm
resource conservation and breeding selection, and a subcommittee on freshwater fish breeding of National Technical Committee of Standardization for
Aquaculture are affiliated to the institute.
