Wilkes University is a private, non-denominational American university located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, with branch centers in Mesa, Arizona and Bartonsville, Pennsylvania. It has over 2,200 undergraduates and over 2,200 graduate students (both full and part-time). Wilkes was founded in 1933 as a satellite campus of Bucknell University, and became an independent institution in 1947, naming itself Wilkes College, after English radical politician John Wilkes. The school was granted university status in January 1990.
The campus is a compact 35 acres and is situated in the heart of Wilkes-Barre, PA, a city of 50,000 thats only about 2.5 hours from Manhattan and Philadelphia. Wilkes University has a 14 to one student to faculty ratio and with over 50 percent of classes having less than 20 students per class. The university offers majors in science, education, engineering, business, and liberal arts for undergraduate and graduate students. The university is accredited by the Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools and has also received accreditation from various professional accreditation associations such as American Chemical Society, Engineering Accreditation Commission, Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology, Accreditation Council for
Business Schools & Programs and many more. When it comes to Ranking and Recognitions, The Economist ranked Wilkes 25th in the nation for economic value. The ranking confirms Wilkes’ commitment to preparing students for academic success in high-paying careers. Wilkes is ranked 16th on the list of 81 colleges and universities in the state that offer a good return on a student’s investment in higher education.
Enrollment includes about 2,000 full-time undergraduate students from 19 states and a dozen foreign countries. 90% of faculty have earned their Ph.D. or highest degree; 15:1 student: faculty ratio. Library include more than 200,000 volumes of books and bound journals; 400 current journals; 10,000 full text online journals; microforms, instructional audio-visual materials and have 16 National Honor Societies. More than 96% of full-time undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid. More than 98% of freshmen receive aid. Merit and need-based aid is available. Honor Scholarships are also available.
