It is the oldest and largest public university in the state. It has become a land-grant institution in 1866. The motto of the university is "God, our light" or "The divine within the universe, however manifested, is my light." The academic staff of the university is 2,189; the students are 43,275; postgraduates are 11,956; undergraduates are 29,504. The affiliations of the university are UW System, AAU, URA, APLU, CIC, and WUN.
