Established in Detroit in 1817, by the governor and judges of Michigan Territory. Earlier called as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, about 20 years before Michigan Territory officially became a state. Rev. John Monteith was one of the universitys founders and its first President. It was one of the founding members of the Association of American Universities, and its body of living alumni (as of 2012) comprises more than 500,000. Women were first admitted in 1870.There are thirteen undergraduate schools and colleges with an enrollment of 43,426 students and 1,438 student organizations It has two satellite campuses located in Flint and Dearborn.
