University of Manchester is a British public university, located in Manchester Univesity. It was established in 1970. It gained the status of a university in 1992. It is the fifth largest university in Britain, in terms of student enrollment. The university is a result of the merger of Manchester Mechanics Institution, Manchester School of Design, the former Domestic and Trades College. It was granted university status as "Manchester Metropolitan University" by the Privy Council on 15 September 1992. The schools are located in two campuses MMU Cheshire and Aytoun campus. All Saints campus is the universitys main campus and houses
social science departments, English and Information and Communications, Politics and Philosophy. The John Dalton Building, on Chester Street is the home of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The university has produced notable alumni.
