The University of Malaya was formed in 1949 with the merger of King Edward VII College of Medicine, established in 1905 and Raffles College in Singapore, established in 1928. It is the oldest university situated in the southwest campus of Kuala Lumpur. University of Malaya is a research based teaching and learning centre. As a result of great response in the first decade of establishment, two autonomous Divisions of University of Malaya was formed on 15 January 1959, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur. But the divisions were turned into that of a national university in 1960. After the Legislation passed in 1961, University of Malaya was established on 1st January 1962.
