University of Geneva was founded in 1559 by John Calvin as a theological seminary and
law school. It is a public research university located in Geneva, Switzerland. The Rector of the University is Prof. Yves Fluckiger from 2015. The Primary objectives of the university are teaching, research, and community service. In 2015, it was ranked 58th worldwide by the Shanghai ranking. In 2011, it was ranked 73rd worldwide by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and 69th in the QS World University Rankings. University of Geneva is a member of the League of European Research Universities (including academic institutions such as Amsterdam, Cambridge, Heidelberg, Helsinki and Milan) the Coimbra Group and the European University Association.
University of Geneva celebrated its 450th anniversary of its founding in 2009. The university has a partnership with the nearby Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and the Bossey Ecumenical Institute, and students at the university may take courses at these institutes. University of Geneva is located in six different locations namely Les Bastions, Uni Dufour, Sciences I, II and III, Uni Mail and Uni Pignon, Centre Medical Universitaire (CMU), and Battelle. These are the main locations. It is located as well in less important locations like the Mathematics Section is located at the second and (partly) third and sixth stories rented by the university in an office building in Carouge.Uni Bastions is the symbol of Genevas academic life. It is located in the middle of a park and is host to the faculty of Protestant Theology and to the Faculty of Arts. Uni Dufour architecture was inspired by Le Corbusier. It hosts the Rectorat and the
administration of the University. Uni Mail is Switzerlands biggest building dedicated to social sciences. It currently hosts the Faculty of Law, of
Economics and Social Sciences, of
Psychology and
Education and the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting.
University of Geneva contains 14,489 students with at least 40% of the students come from foreign countries. The administrative staff is approximately 5,600. The Executive
Education counts more than 1.500 participants and over 45 programs (including an Executive MBA (EMBA) and International Organizations MBA (IOMBA). University offers more than 240 types of diplomas, 30 bachelors degrees, 70 masters and 78 doctorates, 70 masters and 78 doctorates. The University of Geneva had for 2013 a
budget of CHF 558,211,000.
UNIGE is characterized by its versatility and ensures a very high level of research in a wide variety of themes, covering the essential natural sciences, life sciences and medicine, humanities, social sciences,
economics and law. The key areas of research are Life sciences, physics and chemistry, astrophysics. A Fields Medal, considered the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in Mathematics, was awarded in August 2010 to a UNIGE Professor Professor Stanislav Smirnov. At the national level, UNIGE has for several years achieved one of the best results among the Swiss universities with the National Fund for Scientific Research. UNIGE is also actively involved in research Europe, with participation in many European Union H2020 research projects including project coordination and prestigious European Research Council (ERC) fellowships , As well as a traditionally strong presence in the COST program. At the international level, UNIGE has doubled the number of its publications in scientific
journals during the last twenty years. The Geneva university community also benefits from the advantages of a long-standing university with access to rich libraries and extraordinary archives.
