October 9, 1946: The Instituto Tecnológico del Sur was created by Provincial Act No. 5051; in 1947: An agreement regarding funds supply for the maintenance and operation of institute was signed by the province Buenos Aires and the Nation; February 12, 1948: Dr. Miguel Lopez Frances appointed as University President by incumbent president (Juan Domingo Perón). Miguel Lopez Frances undertaken necessary measures for the organization; 1948: official inauguration ceremony was held February 20; 1950: The category of university was granted; in 1953: Nereo Roberto Parro is the first graduate from the university; Under Decree
Law No. 154, the Universidad Nacional del Sur was created on January 5, 1956 and it was issued by the National Executive Power.
Accountancy, Economics, Physics,
Geology and Geography, Mathematics, Engineering, Humanities, and Chemistry are the first departments in Universidad Nacional del Sur. Most of the departments, laboratories and Central Library of university located in Alem. Departments of Humanities, Economics, Geography and Tourism, and
Administration Sciences were located at intersection of 12 de Octubre and San Juan streets. Departments of
Agronomy and
Law are located at Altos del Palihue. Escuela de Agricultura y Ganadería "Ing. Agr. Adolfo J. Zabala" is also located in the Altos del Palihue. Currently university is having 16 departments includes: Agronomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer science, Economics, Electrical engineering, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Humanities, Law, Management, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics.
At present, there are 16 Departments and about 2,600 faculty members, 50 first degree courses completely free of charge for about 24,000 regular students and 51 postgraduate courses for about 1,300 students enrolled in specializations, master’s, and doctor’s degree programs.
According to LatAm University ranking Universidad Nacional del Sur occupied #83, number 48 in the Iberoamerican Ranking SCIMAGO 2012 (for research institutions) and number 6 taking into account only Argentine universities. In the QS Ranking for Latin America 2013 the UNS is number 66.
Jorge Laurent, David Tomás Prieto are the first students who started their career in the institute and first graduates from the university. Betty Kerlleñevich is the first woman who obtained
her degree from the university.
