Founded in 1551, the University of Seville, is one of the leading institutions of Spain’s higher education system and was founded under the name Colegio Santa María de Jesús. It is one of the leading institutions of Spain’s higher education system and is the main public university with the highest number of students. Located in the downtown area, the University’s main building is bordered by the Maria Luisa Park and the Guadalquivir River. The total University Centres are 27 and Associate Centres are 6. The University has 133 Departments. As of fall 2009, the university has collaboration with 15 international organizations along with the Council on International Educational Exchange, the College Consortium for International Studies, International Studies Abroad, SUNY New Paltz and Wells College and St. Johns University. The University of Seville has had a partnership with the Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard University since 2015. Other campuses and faculties are located throughout Seville, including the Health Science schools in La Macarena, the Business School in Nervion, the Engineering School and School of Communications (La Cartuja) and the Languages Institute and Science Schools in Reina Mercedes. The University has statistics of students over 65,000, and is one of the top ranked universities in the country. It’s Schools of Philology, Geography and History, Philosophy, Biology and Engineering and many schools and technological institutes associated with the university, serve the educational needs of some 70,000 students. It has been associated with the Campus of International Excellence, the US reference of Research, Development and Innovation. It has more than 400 research groups, 4,500 researchers and close to 7,500 yearly scientific publications with international impact. More than 9,000 students doing internships in more than 3,500 businesses. Committed to quality and excellence, the university is with European Certificate of Quality for the EFQM model of excellence. The University ranks third in the whole country as far as number of patents generated on a national level, and is the founder of many Knowledge-Based Businesses.
