The Federal University of Bahia has its beginning on February 18, 1808, when the Prince Regent Dom João VI establishing the School of
Surgery of Bahia, Brazils first university course. In the nineteenth century, incorporated the School of Pharmacy (1832) and
Dentistry (1864), the Academy of Fine Arts (1877),
Law (1891) and Polytechnic (1896). In the twentieth century, Isaiah Alves creates the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters (1941) founder UFBa - The first rector of the University was featured in the trajectory of higher education. Born in Salvador, in 1894, graduated in
medicine and did specialization in
surgery in São Paulo. Upon returning, he joined the chair of
Pathology and
Surgery and directed the School of Medicine. Rector for 15 years (1946-1961), led the process of federalization and implemented the physical infrastructure and staff, writing the first chapter of an integrated university: Arts, Letters,
Humanities and Sciences. In the first year of the Rector University of Bahia, constitutes formally. In 1950, passes the Federal University of Bahia, integrating the isolated schools and instituting other courses. In fifteen years under the rectorship of Edgard Santos, UFBA flourished in the arts,
humanities and health.
