The Future Ocean

The Future Ocean

The Future Ocean is a Cluster of Excellence founded in November 2006 in line with the German excellence initiative by the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU), the Muthesius Kunsthochschule (MKHS), the Institute for Weltwirtschaft (IfW) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung (GEOMAR). It is an interdisciplinary marine research group and it is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and part of the cluster is the Integrated School of Ocean Sciences (ISOS) which is a post graduate school for ocean sciences in Kiel. The ocean, it covers more than two thirds of our planet. Even so, we know more about the surface of the moon than about the depths of the seas. In fact fact that mankinds future lies in the worlds seas. They will determine the climate of tomorrow across the entire globe and we are already suffering from the advance of global warming. In "The Future Ocean", experts from diverse specialist areas are combining their expertise. Marine scientists, medical researchers, mathematicians, chemists, engineers and social scientists are dedicating themselves to further questions.
The network partners include six faculties and 26 institutes at Kiel University, as well as the GEOMAR | Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. The Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean” is supported within the framework of the “excellence initiative” of the German Research Foundation (DFG) on behalf of the German government and the federal states of Germany. The External Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) is currently composed of 15 national and international experts. The SAB meets in Kiel once a year and provides guidance and advice to the cluster.
The cluster has several international partners, e.g. the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, Columbia University in New York, USA, the Ocean University of China in Quingdao and others.
The ISOS is the central platform for post-graduate education in Marine Sciences in Kiel, and is part of the Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean”. Currently it is offering 10 main courses for PhD candidates. Here you find a list of ISOS courses for PhD candidates in which ISOS PhDs have priority. The list of courses is continually updated so look in periodically. The ISOS regularly offers a course which gives you an insight into how our academic system works. It offers 10 main courses for PHD students.
The new structure of fully integrated research within the Cluster allows establishing a new feedback loop. It operates between improved basic ocean system understanding, improved prediction and scenarios and improved ocean governance models.
The research programmes in the The Future Ocean are Our Common Future Ocean, Ocean Governance, Ocean Resources, Ocean Innovations, Ocean Sinks, Dangerous Ocean, Ocean Interfaces, Evolving Ocean, Ocean Controls, Ocean Observations and Predicted Ocean. Scientific progress is required in basic ocean system understanding.
The first funding period started on 1 November 2006 and lasted till 31 October 2012. On 15 June 2012 the funding for the cluster of excellence The Future Ocean was extended by another five years. During this period from 1 November 2012 to 31 October 2017 the former research areas Greenhouse Ocean (A) and Resources and Risks (B) were terminated and replaced by the fully integrated Research Topics.
