The Stony Brook University--SUNY is a public institution that was founded in 1957. Stony Brook University has quickly made a name for itself among the top research universities in the country. Stony Brooks reach extends from its 1,039-acre campus on Long Islands North Shore–encompassing the main academic areas. The 1,100 acre campus sits on Long Islands north shore about 60 miles from New York City. SUNYs ranking in the 2015 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, 88. Because of the universitys strengths in research and instruction, it was awarded membership in the Association of American Universities in 2001. Its in-state tuition and fees are $8,430 (2014-15); out-of-state tuition and fees are $21,850 (2014-15). Stony Brook University offers undergraduates 119 majors and minors for students to choose from, and the biological and health sciences are particularly strong.
