On June 26, 1992, a group of professors from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Peking University and Tsinghua University (three of the leading universities in China) initiated the notion of establishing a university with funding from the private sector. Sanda University was thus founded on August 11, 1992. It was the first full-time private university offering programs leading to accredited certificates and diplomas in the country. On March 6, 2002, with the official ratification of the Chinese Ministry of Education, it became — under the supervision of Shanghai Municipal
Education Commission — the first full-time private comprehensive university providing undergraduate courses in China. Following an ordinance from by the Ministry of
Education in 2002, Sanda University changed its official name to Shanghai Sanda Institute, although the name Sanda University is still widely used. Sanda University is the first private university established in Peoples Republic of China (since all universities were made public following the 1949 revolution), located in Shanghai.
Faculties include School of
Information Science and Technology, Sheng Xiang School of Business, School of Managemen, School of Humanities, School of Foreign Languages, School of Engineering, School of Adult Education, School of International Medical Technology. Since the founding of Sanda University, it has established exchange and cooperation
relationships with overseas universities and research institutions, including Rider University, American University, University of Central Lancashire, University of Hull, University of Essex, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Pennsylvania State University, Waseda University, Soka University, Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, and University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The main campus is on a 26.8 hectare site in Pudong, in the south of Shanghai. A second campus, known as Guangbiao Institute, was established in 2002 and is in Jiashan County, Zhejiang province. It is named after Cao Guangbiao, one of the major donors to Sanda.
The university has around 10,000 students and 450 full-time academic staff, covering a range of academic disciplines including business, computer science, engineering, foreign languages, and management. The Sanda University contains Administrative staff of 450 members. The University has two campuses, one in the Pudong District of Shanghai and the other in Jiashan County, Zhejiang Province, with a total area of 133 acres and a building area of 300,000 square meters. Currently there are 746 faculty members, including 547 full-time teachers. With a total enrollment of 12,800 students in 2015, 11,900 of whom being undergraduates, Sanda has had a total number of over 34,000 graduates since its foundation. Sanda has 16 schoolsthat offer 27 undergraduate programs in the fields of Economics, Law, Literature, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Management, Arts, and Education. Sanda has over 160 off-campus practice bases. In 2014 alone, 28 university-level industry-university cooperative
education bases were set up. There are 45 part-time professors and 142 teaching labs, creating essential opportunities for training application-oriented talents.
The University has been awarded many honors such as National Advanced Non-Governmental Organization, AAAAA Unit, National Excellent Private University, May 1st
Labor Medal, and Shanghai
Model Unit (6 times in a row), Shanghai Safety
Model Unit, etc. For the past 3 years, the average employment rate for the graduate is 98%. SSB is recognized in many ways for it academic achievements, such as course development and program quality. 15 courses are recognized as key courses by the Shanghai Municipal government, and 3 as
Model courses delivered in English only. It also focus of
entrepreneurship education and program related extra curriculum activities, providing opportunities and support and services to students for hands-on experiences.
