Ruhr University is located at southern hills of central Ruhr area Bochum, was founded in 1962. Ruhr University is financed and administered by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Currently, 38,675 students are enrolled, employs 5,500 staff one of the ten largest universities in Germany Kurt Biedenkopf, who later became prime minister of the state of Saxony, was director of the university from 1967 to 1969. n 2009, Germany’s team of eight became the world rowing champions in Poznan / Poland, 2010 in Lake Karapiro/New Zealand, 2011 in Bleder See/Slovenia. Five rowers and the coxswain of Germanys eight are students at the Ruhr University. The RUB-rowers also win the Ruhr University Cup year after year, against competition from the Ruhr area. The Federal Ministry of
Education and Research is providing over 12 mio. euros of funding toward the improvement of teaching at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB): the university was successful with not one, but two applications within the “Programme to improve study conditions and teaching quality at universities”, and has launched its “inStudies” and “ELLI” programmes. The new Centre for Mediterranean Studies groups together the many activities relating to the Mediterranean region at RUB. They cover the period from antiquity to the present day, focussing primarily on four areas: mobility, social networks, inter-cultural communication, and political networks. The centre, the first of its kind in Germany, receives over 2 mio. euros of funding from the Federal Ministry of
Education and Research.
