The Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (in Catalan : Reial Acadèmia de Ciències i Arts of Barcelona ) is a Real Academy located in Barcelona , Spain , founded in 1764 as literary society and in 2007 fulfills the functions of the study of Sciences, especially in the field of Catalonia. It was founded as an Experimental Physy-Mathematical Conference , being its first President Francisco Subirás , to be later denominated by Real Cedula like Real Physical Conference that would deal with the affairs relative to the Principality of Catalonia . After changing its name again by the Royal Academy of Natural Sciences and Arts , since 1887 maintains its current name. The Academy has a library with over one hundred thousand volumes which is considered one of the most important in Spain due to the abundance of scientific works of more than three centuries, a historical archive and a complex composed of the Fabra astronomical observatory , inaugurated in 1904 , With astronomical , seismological and meteorological equipment . The building of the Academy is the work of the architect Josep Domènech i Estapà , inaugurated in the year 1894 and is located in La Rambla núm 115. On the ground floor is the Poliorama Theater.
The Academy is governed by the Board of Directors (also called the General Board of Directors) consisting of the President, the Vice-President, the Secretary General, the Deputy Secretary-General, the Treasurer, the Accountant, the Directors of Sections and the Director of the Observatori Fabra. It is composed of 75 Academics, by the Academics dispensed from attendance and by the corresponding National Academies and foreigners in an undetermined number. The latter are chosen from those people who do not have habitual residence in Barcelona or its surroundings and have carried out works of recognized scientific merit.
The Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona was constituted the 18 of January of 1764 like a private literary society with the name of Physycomathematical Conference Experimental and, by virtue of the "Real Cedula" of 17 of December of 1765, happened to Real Conference Physics as a public advisory body of the King for the affairs of the Principat de Catalunya. By effect of the "Real Certificate" of 14 of October of 1770 would change its title by the one of Real Academy of Natural Sciences and Arts of Barcelona until the "Real Order" of 7 of December of 1887 determined its current name.
