Roskilde University was founded in 1972 which was earlier a public university located in Trekroner in the Eastern part of Roskilde, Denmark. It originally established so as to challenge tutorial traditions and to experiment with new ways that to make and acquire information, to create opportunities that will be beyond anyone’ imagination, so that it can help to develop sustainable solutions to the major challenges that will be faced in future generation. Main aim of the institution is that they focus on project work and problem-based learning. It is runs by a board consisting of 9 members: 5 members recruited outside the university form the majority of the board, 1 member is appointed by the scientific staff, 1 member is appointed by the administrative staff, and 2 members are appointed by the university students.
College offer both Bachelor’s, Master’s programmes and Ph.D. levels within four main areas- humanities, humanistic technologies, social science and science. Bachelors programme include International Bachelor Study Programme in the Humanities including subjects are Communication Studies, Cultural Encounters, International Bachelor Study Programme in the Natural Sciences including subjects are Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Biology, Mathematics, Molecular Biology, Physics and International Bachelor Study Programme in Social Science including subjects are Business Administration, Business Studies, International Studies. Master’s programme include Biology and Chemistry with subjects Chemistry, Environmental Biology, Molecular Biology; Culture with subject Cultural Encounters; Mathematics and Physics; Business with subjects Business Studies, Economics and Business Administration; Information Technology with subjects Computer Science, Informatics; Society including subjects Global Studies, International Development Studies, International Public Administration and Politics, Social Entrepreneurship and Management, Spatial Designs and Society. University has four institutions in very different areas from Mathematics to International Development- Department of Communication and Arts (DCA), Department of Science and Environment (DSE), Department of People and Technology (DPT) and Department of Social Sciences and Business.
According to QS World University Rankings which is an annual publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) report in 2015/6, Politics & International Studies scored 151-200 and Communication & Media Studies scored 151-200. The system comprises of subject rankings from worlds top universities for the study of 46 different subjects and five composite faculty areas from five independent regional tables- Asia, Latin America, Emerging Europe and Central Asia, the Arab Region, and BRICS. For which it is only the international ranking to have received International Ranking Expert Group (IREG) approval. As per Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2017, university ranked as 501-600.
The Universitys research is organized into six Departments that are characterised by multi-disciplinary approaches across traditional discipline boundaries. The research has a special focus on responding to societal needs for knowledge and addressing complex issues in more holistic ways than is typically the case with traditional single disciplinarily. Mainly it is based upon openness both internally and externally in interaction with the surroundings. So that one can constantly endeavour to find new ways to interact with the outside world. Sharing Knowledge is the main aim for university research. Many notable alumini & researchers came from this university which include politicians Johanne Schmidt-Nielsen and Simon Emil Ammitzbøllm, philosopher Vincent Fella Rune Møller Hendricks, founder of Journal of Pragmatics- Hartmut Haberland, Danish singer-songwriter and television presenter Christine Lorentzen, etc.,
