Pacific Southwest Research Station is one of several research stations in the research and development (R&D) arm of the Forest Service, a component of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and works at the forefront of science to improve the
health and use of our Nations forests and grasslands. It is a world leader in natural resources research through our scientific excellence and responsiveness to the needs of current and future generations. The PSW Research Station represents the research and development branch of the U.S. Forest Service in the states of California and Hawaii and the U.S. affiliated Pacific Islands. It plays a leadership role in
climate change and
greenhouse gas science at national and international levels. The research station initiated the Sudden Oak Death Research (SOD) Program in late 2000. The program was prompted by late fiscal year funding dedicated directly to begin research on this newly discovered disease. PSW Research station mission is to develop and communicate science needed to sustain forest ecosystems and their benefits to society.
