Oswaldo Cruz Institute is a public institution of health, linked to Brazilian ministry of health. It was founded on May 25 in 1990, has facilitated
health tool R&D for neglected diseases and established with the objective of developing Serum, Vaccines, Drugs. It was first called as “Serum Therapeutic Institute”. The Fiocruzs headquarter is located at an 800,000-square meter campus in Manguinhos, a neighbourhood in the northern of Rio de Janeiro city, installed in 10 states, with 16 scientific and technical units, focused on teaching, research, innovation, assistance technological development, quality control of products and services, implementation of social programs and extension in
health field. Fiocruz is one of the founding members of the international association of national
public health institutes, a membership organisation of national
public health institutes. It produces, spreads, share knowledge and technologies aimed at the strengthing and consolidation of unified
health systems and contribute to the promotion of
health and quality life to the people. In order to improve governance and technical delivery of the
health system, the Foundation coordinates a National Network of
Health Government Schools and a National Network of Technical Schools in Health, and contributes with more than 20 reference laboratories of a National Network of Epidemiological Vigilance.
