The Orpheus Institute is an international centre of excellence with its primary focus on artistic research in music: "research embedded in musical practice and primarily guided by artistic objectives." Throughout our activities there is a clear focus on the development of a new research discipline in the arts, addressing trending questions and topics at the heart of musical practice. All these aspects have made the Orpheus Institute what it is today: an influential driving force for new developments in artistic research and artistic practice, with an impact that is felt worldwide. Since 1996 the Orpheus Institute hosts a small-scale laureate programme for young promising musicians. In 2004 it introduced the first doctoral programme docARTES for performers and composers in collaboration with Flemish and Dutch partner institutions. docARTES is now one of Europe’s leading doctoral schools in music. Next to that, the Orpheus Institute also offers a Masterclass Chamber Music every year: 5 musicians with a rich chamber music experience provide invaluable tips and hints to young ensembles and prepare them for a concert at the Orpheus Institute. A research pioneer ‘Made in Flanders’.......The Orpheus Research Centre in Music [ORCiM] was launched in 2007. Its mission is to produce and promote the highest quality research into music, the processes of music making, and our understanding of them. Throughout the research centres activities there is a clear focus on the development of a new research discipline in the arts: one that addresses questions and topics at the heart of the artist’s musical practice. Research at ORCiM addresses long-standing and emerging issues that are of great significance to the artistic and artistic-research communities in both Flanders and abroad. From this group, "An international team of around 15 part-time researchers from 10 different countries" was selected. In 2010 – led to a shared research focus on ‘Artistic Experimentation in Music. Over the years ORCiM has built a strong international network comprising relevant institutions and individual artist researchers, and continues to attract visiting experts to contribute to this dynamic research environment.
