National Institute for
Health and Welfare The National Institute for
Health and Welfare (THL) is a research and development institute under the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. Formerly known as STAKES, THL seeks to serve the broader society in addition to the scientific community, actors in the field and decision-makers in central government and municipalities. The aim is to promote
health and welfare in Finland. The European
Public Health association, or EUPHA in short, is an umbrella organisation for
public health associations and institutes in Europe. EUPHA was founded in 1992 by 15 members (12 countries). EUPHA now has
71 members from
41 countries:37 national associations of
public health 18 institutional members 9 European NGOs 4 individual members 1 global member EUPHA is an international, multidisciplinary, scientific organisation, bringing together around 14’000
public health experts for professional exchange and collaboration throughout Europe. We encourage a multidisciplinary approach to public health. Our mission is to facilitate and activate a strong voice of the
public health network by enhancing visibility of the evidence and by strengthening the capacity of
public health professionals. EUPHA defines public
health professionals as: all professionals that monitor and diagnose the
health concerns of entire communities and promote healthy practices and behaviours to ensure that populations stay healthy. This definition specifically includes
health services researchers. THL promotes wide-ranging use of information resources in the field of social and
health care. As part of this objective, THL provides
open access to data produced and collated at the institute, thereby implementing the principle of open data defined in THLs strategy and the Government Open Data Programme.
