Kumamoto University was established under the National School Establishment Law, which reformed the preceding Japanese educational system and opened its wings in Medical, Pharma and technical branches. Since the Universitys inception, a number of allied schools and facilities have been incorporated and developed within its structure. Currently the University is home for around 8100 undergraduate and 2000 graduate students.
