Kennedy Krieger Institute was started in the year 1937 on the demand for the need of treatment for individuals with cerebral palsy by Winthrop Phelps. He started with the Children Rehabilitation Institute, which was the first organization to dedicate towards the treatment of children suffering from cerebral palsy. After the approval of the Medical training Act, it was renamed after President John F. Kennedy as Kennedy Institute. This institute aided in enhancing the lives of persons with disabilities. Later in 1992, it was again renamed as Kennedy Krieger to honor the board member and well wished supporter Zanyyl Krieger. It mainly deals with the cases of children with brain-related disorders, learning disabilities, genetic disorders etc. Along with the research, this institute involves in schooling and medical care.
