The Technical University of Kaiserslautern (German Technische Universität Kaiserslautern or simply TU Kaiserslautern) is a research university in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The University of Kaiserslautern has gained international reputation in research and teaching. It has a distinguished reputation in the fields of mathematics and computer science. In addition, students and (young) scientists benefit from the numerous internationally renowned research institutions, including three Fraunhofer Institutes ( IESE, ITWM, and IPM), the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) , the Institute for composite materials (IVW), the Institute for technology and work (ITA), the Institute of biotechnology and drug research (IBWF) and the Institute for surface and Thin film analysis (IFOS), all of which cooperate closely with the university for applied research.

The University of Kaiserslautern was founded on July 13, 1970. Earlier it was part of the twin University Trier/Kaiserslautern. In the winter semester 1970/1971 student and scientific activities started with the matriculation of 191 new students the faculties in Mathematics, Physics and Technology. In 1972 the set-up of the faculties Chemistry and Biology gave a boost to the extension of a scientifically specialized structure. At the same time the faculty of Technology was split into the faculties Mechanical Engineering and Electrotechnology, Architecture/Regional and Environmental Planning/Educational Sciences.

These are the 12 faculties in which the university is divided Architecture, Biology, Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Sciences, Mechanical and Process Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Regional and Environmental Planning, Social Sciences, Business Studies and Economics along with this there are research fields such as Active substances for the future, Ambient intelligence, Artificial Intelligence, Innovative lightweight construction, Materials for micro and nanosystems (MINAS), Mathematics and implementation, Optical technologies and laser-induced processes, Mobile Radio Communication, Autonomous Robots, Embedded Systems.

Research at the TU Kaiserslautern

The TU Kaiserslautern is a research-oriented university, whose aim is to promote the work of its scientists even more specifically, thereby creating the ideal starting conditions for excellence. The Approval Committee of the Excellence Initiative of the Federal Government and the Länder has decided on the projects for the funding phase 2012-2017. The continuation application for the Graduate School of Excellence "Materials Science in Mainz", together with the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Spokeshochschule), was approved for another five years.
