The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) serves as a regional Institute for Training and Research in Population Studies for the ESCAP region. It was established in Mumbai in July 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India and the United Nations. The Institute is under the administrative control of the Ministry of
Health and
Family Welfare, Government of India. Institute presently offers M.A./M.Sc. in Population Studies, M.Sc. in
Biostatistics & Demography, Master of Population Studies (MPS), M. Phil. and Ph.D. in Population Studies. The MPS teaching is conducted both as regular, classroom course and through distance learning. This institute maintains a library with full of demographic information sources in various forms like published, unpublished, printed, electronic, and online. The library has fully automated in ‘System for Library & Information
Management -21’ (SLIM21) software. During the past 53 years, students from 42 different countries of Asia and the Pacific region, Africa and North America have been trained at the Institute. Many, who are trained at the Institute, now occupy key positions in the field of Population and
Health in Government of various countries, Universities and Research Institutes as well as in reputed National and International organizations. Institute also conducts a large number of research projects on various aspects of population, projects like evaluative studies and large-scale surveys, studies related to inter-relationship of various social and economic variables of the components of population change such as Fertility, Mortality and Migration etc. The research projects of the Institute are mostly funded by the Ministry of
Health and
Family Welfare, Government of India and also by the State Governments, World Bank, United Nations Population Fund, World
Health Organization, International Labour Organization and other Government and Non-Government organizations. The Institute had completed 7 Research Projects during 2008-2009. There are 19 on-going research projects, which were initiated during the year 2008-2009 and are in different stages of completion. Also, 3 new research projects are being taken up during the year 2008-2009. There are 11 on-going research project funded by the outside agencies. The most prominent among them are the National
Family Health Survey (NFHS), District Level Household Survey under Reproductive and
Child Health project (DLHS-RCH) and YOUTH in India. The Institute has undertaken one new project funded by outside agency. The Institute also provides consultancy to the Government and Non-Government organizations and other academic institutions. The institute brings out a quarterly Newsletter, Working Papers, Research Brief Series, Books, Research Reports/Monographs, Seminar/Conference Proceedings which publishes information about various ongoing activities of the Institute. During the last five decades the Institute has organized many seminar and conferences of National and International level in the field of population studies which are of world wide importance and had conducted many important surveys like National
Family Health Survey (NFHS), District Level Household Survey (DLHS), National
Rural Health Mission (NRHM), YOUTH in India Project, Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS India Project), Research Intervention Sexual
Health Theory to Action (RISHTA Project).
