The Institute of Information Theory and Automation (UTIA) is a public non-university research institution which administratively falls under the Czech Academy of Sciences. UTIA conducts fundamental and applied research in computer science, signal and image processing, pattern recognition, system science, and control theory. In addition to its research activities, UTIA is engaged in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate education. It also publishes the journal Kybernetika and acts as a certified forensic expert institution. UTIA consists of eight scientific departments, computer centre, library, facility maintenance department and
business administration department. UTIA is managed by the Director and the Board. The Institute of Information Theory and Automation (UTIA) was established in 1959 as a merger of two academic laboratories: the Department of Information Theory of the Institute of Radio Engineering and the Laboratory for Automation and Telemechanics.
UTIA has been involved in basic research in systems, control, and information science. It achieved significant results in research on the entropy of various sources and in the capacity of information channels with memories in 1960. They saw the development of an algebraic approach to control system design, which yielded numerous important results, including parameterization of all stabilizers in 1970. The main projects include a Bayesian approach to self-tuning control, a theory of R-nyi distances in probabilistic spaces, and a method of mathematical modeling large-scale gas-distribution networks. UTIA currently holds research grants from European Communities or Unions, the National Science Foundation and the Czech Science Foundation.
The research library of UTIA contains 30,000 books and journals. The computational resources of UTIA include an IBM mainframe computer, a local area network of HP 720 workstations, an image processing system Pericolor, a transputer-based system for parallel computing, as well as a number of personal computers. In 1990, UTIA was given a major grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York, to upgrade its facilities. UTIA publishes the journal Kybernetika and is the seat of the Czech Society for Cybernetics and Informatics. It regularly organizes the Prague Conferences on Information Theory as well as other events sponsored by the International Federation of Automatic Control and the International Federation of Information Processing. UTIA has developed close research and teaching ties with numerous academic and industrial institutions. It is affiliated with several institutions of higher education, including Czech Technical University and Charles University. It is a home of the Prague Technology Center, a joint research establishment with Honeywell, Inc.
The Institute is involved in fundamental as well as applied research in computer science, artificial intelligence, stochastic informatics, signal/image processing and pattern recognition, control theory, systems theory, and econometrics (for more about the research topics go to the pages of scientific departments). The Institute contributes to increasing the level of knowledge and
education and to applications of research results in practice. The Institute works independently or in cooperation with universities and other institutions. The Institute is very active in international cooperation. It has participated in several EU-funded projects and many bilateral agreements and contracts. On the national level, the Institute closely cooperates with 8 faculties of 4 universities, with other institutes of the ASCR, and with industry. The top forms of the cooperation are Joint Research Centers and Joint Laboratories. There is DYME center active in present. During years 2005-2011 were active following centers: SALOME, Center for Monetary Macro-dynamics, CAK II, DAR, CQR, CZVDEE. The institute is a principal investigator of many national research projects funded mostly by GA CR. The various research departments are: Adaptive systems, Control theory, Decision making theory, Econometrics, Image processing, Pattern recognition, Signal processing, Stochastic informatics
