The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) pursues excellence in basic science research. IBS was recognized in November 2011 as a research institute inside the International Science and
Business Belt (ISBB) by the Lee Myung bak direction. The goal of IBS is to advance the borders of knowledge and to train the leading scientists of future. IBS was established as Korea’s first dedicated basic science research institute. By studying the important principles of nature, basic science is essential in creating new knowledge from which significant societal transformations are derived. IBS upholds the highest quality of research that will increase the national basic science capacity and produce new openings for this nation. By increasing strong interactions from autonomous research support systems, outstanding talents and world-class infrastructure, IBS is steadily growing into a major basic research institute that meets the global values of excellence.

By chasing superiority in research, IBS has selected global important scientists as employers of Centers through its competitive grant programs. These employers are operating 28 Centers of which research proposals are ranked highest in the IBS PR (Peer Review) process. The review is supported by a Review Panel composed of independent and expert scientists from Korea and abroad. Directors choose the themes of their research and assign capitals. Usually, Centers work projects with no fixed term for their duration as long as the quality of research is verified in evaluations. New Centers receive an initial evaluation 5 years after its launch followed by 3 year break evaluations.
IBS has been inviting qualified scientists from around the globe and providing them full support for their relocations. Young scientists also enjoy unique research opportunities to cooperate with world renowned scientists and to organize and operate their own research groups, broadening their expertise. IBS brings together outstanding talents throughout career levels to grow and inspire each other through close partnerships.
The IBS plans to draw 3,000 researchers and staff to 50 research centers in Daejeon and around the country. Each centre will have an average yearly
budget of 10 billion won, and will be directed by a world-class scientist employed on a 10-year contract. The directors will be given a great agreement of independence to decide on a research focus, trainee staff and run their hubs.
