Institut Jean Nicod

The Institut Jean Nicod (also known as IJN) is a CNRS research based in Paris. Founded in 2000 its name commemorates the French philosopher and logician Jean Nicod. Presently, the Institute is co-hosted by the École Normale & the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, two prestigious French institutions for research and higher education. Research carried by its members has a strongly interdisciplinary profile, at the interface between philosophy, cognitive science, and the social sciences. The main scientific fields covered by the Institute include linguistics, cognitive anthropology and philosophy of mind. Almost all members of the group are philosophers, the issues addressed are not purely conceptual and have a strong empirical component. For several years, members of the Institute have led research projects in collaboration with cognitive and developmental psychologists, neuropsychologists and cognitive neuroscientists. If the basic discipline is analytical philosophy, the unit also houses advanced research in linguistics and social sciences, the unifying theme being the human spirit and the nature of representations. At the ENS, the Jean Nicod Institute is attached to both the Department of Philosophy and the Department of Cognitive Studies. The IJN, headed by François Recanati, is housed at 29 rue dUlm, in the Department of Cognitive Studies of the Ecole Normale Supérieure. The members of the Institute teach, supervise memorials and supervise courses in two master degrees which they helped to found. The master of cognitive sciences &The Master of Contemporary Philosophy. The Linguistics courses of the members of the Institute are divided between the CogMaster (master of cognitive sciences), the specific courses of the DEC (also valid in the CogMaster), and the "Arts et Langages" Master of EHESS .
