Hainan Medical University or HMU is a college built in 1993 which offers degrees in medicine. The current school was made in 1993 with the endorsement of the Central Government. In 1951, two private medicinal universities were combined to structure the Hainan Specialized Medical School. These two universities were Haiqiang Medical Vocational School (made in 1947) and the Medical College of Hainan University (built in 1948). Mr. Tseven Soong was its first General Director of the Board, after the establishing of the Peoples Republic of China in 1949; this school was rebuilt as the Hainan Medical Vocational School and later turned into the Medical Department of Hainan University. In 1993, the school turned into the Hainan Medical College to reflect its specialization in medicine. In 1994, Hainan Medical College was certified to offer Bachelors Degrees and in 1996 was authorized for undergrad training by the Ministry of Education. In 2000, the College created another grounds on Chengxi Road.
