Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) was established at Ludhiana by an act of the Punjab Legislature No. 16 of 2005 notified in the Punjab Government Gazette on August 9, 2005 and it started functioning w.e.f. April 21, 2006 for promoting livestock production, health and prevention of the disease(s) through integrated teaching, research and extension programme(s). The University was established with the following goals and objectives: To provide adequate supply of trained veterinary professionals including Master’s and Doctorate level specialists capable of handling livestock health and production aspects according to the needs of the State Government and allied agencies. To undertake research work in selected areas and wherever applicable following multidisciplinary approach. To encourage cooperation and collaboration with other departments, colleges, universities and industries, both nationally and internationally. To run “Referral” hospitals for specialized treatment and also to provide clinical training to the students. ADVASU has attained excellence in the field of livestock, poultry and fisheries production and health through integrated teaching, research and extension programmes and is producing quality human resources. GADVASU has a number of novel strength To promote students participation in community service, the university is running National Service Scheme. NSS volunteers donate blood directly to the Hospitals in case of emergency. The blood donation camps are organised in collaboration with DMCH and other social organisations. The main focus of the scheme is on personality development through community service. University NSS volunteers have always played a pivotal role in extending value based services during every hour of need. Tree plantation, community health programs, debates/discussions on socially relevant issues such as AIDS, drug menace are some of projects being pursued by NSS volunteers RVC (Remount Veterinary Corps) students take part in equestrian championship and take part in horse show jumping and tent pegging. The prestigious ‘Sharma Trophy ‘ of Tent pegging has been consecutively won in 2009 and 2010 by GADVASU students. GADVASU girls have won many gold medals in Hacks and show jumping.
